In 2008 Lexicon celebrates ten years with Unindustria Venezia.
As part of the section called Terziario Innovativo, Lexicon has contributed to publicity material, technical brochures, contracts and a whole range of other communication requirements for the Association itself and its fellow members. Ivor Coward contributed actively to the Giovani Imprenditori group of young business people with forward-thinking approaches.
Lexicon's experience in translating for the world of industry dates back to before the establishment of Lexicon itself when, in 1991, Ivor worked in-house for Mestre-based "European Industrial Engineering producing all the documentation in English for an engineering project: VLT (Very Large Telescope). This was the follow-up project to the NTT (New Technology Telescope), both being engineering projects for the design and construction of the world's two most powerful land-based optical telescopes, launched by European scientific bodies, in particular ESO (European Southern Observatory).
The experience gained in glossary management, accuracy in highly-specific technical areas, calls for tender and contract work proved invaluable for "going it alone" when Ivor and Alessandra Caberlotto opened Lexicon "Traduttori Associati" with colleague and friend Chiara Bellamio the following year, 1992.
Lexicon survived the economic crisis in Italy of 1992-1993 and soon began providing qualified language support for such local companies as ACTV (Venice public transport company), Casiṇ di Venezia (municipal casino), SAVE (Venice Airport), Gruppo Coin/Oviesse/Bimbus, EVC, Porsche Italia, Felletti Spadazzi pharmaceuticals and other lesser-known companies and law firms.
The mid 1990s saw Lexicon take up multiple challenges: always interested in technology, we invested in Computer Assisted Translation technology when serving large industries such as Systel international (Gretag group) and CAME (automated gates). The application of software to the highly specialised area of legal translation was a greater challenge, which was taken on by Alessandra Caberlotto. The team began working for international law firms based in Milan, Rome and London and has carved out a significant niche market for itself in the legal-financial-tax consulting field. Today Lexicon provides turnkey services in legal translations for Italy's largest law firms.
In the late 1990s, Ivor Coward began working increasingly in the areas of culture, communication and advertising/copywriting. He personally translated official catalogues of the Accademia art gallery in Venice, and of two international Biennale exhibitions (1996, 1997); he also in that period undertook various books for publishing firms including Mondadori, Elemond, Electa, Sperling & Kupfer and Light Hunter Publications. A passion for the Dolomites mountains blended successfully with work for books on the history and tourism of that area.
In 1999 Lexicon was assigned the project by Italy's tourist board (ENIT) to produce the official jubilee web site in six languages for the Jubilee year of 2000. The texts produced at the time, describing Italy's regions, history and points of interest are still online on the official ENIT web site.
The new millennium brought with it new experiences. Ivor Coward, first appointed Honorary Secretary for the British Chamber of Commerce (Venice) in 1998, was appointed British Honorary Consul in Venice in 2000 with responsibility over the regions of Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia. It is a position that, despite the sometimes heavy workload, is valued highly by Ivor. After being assigned responsibility for Trieste in October 2007, his current "Commission" from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and "Exequatur" from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is valid until 2010.
As to translation work, in 2004 Ivor was contacted by the Europe-famous web agency E-tree/Etnoteam to work on Italy's most-visited web site: www.trenitalia.com. Working for Etnoteam has moved on into new and challenging projects such as the web sites for Edison, Autostrade per l'Italia (Italy's motorways), Unicredit Bank and several other quality sites and portals.
Ten years on from signing up to the local Venice employers association, Lexicon is proud to be a member of that the association. We celebrate ten years with Unindustria di Venezia by offering promotional translations to all paid-up members of Italy's nationwide employers association, Confindustria.
We look forward to another exciting decade of serving the needs of the business world.
